MT-AIR: Schneider Electric unveils its medium voltage switchboard of the future without SF6 and digital

Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, unveiled the new technology of its medium voltage switchboard at CIRED 2019, the international congress of electrical distribution networks.

These new devices are isolated in the air instead of SF6 gas and are equipped with communicating sensors allowing advanced data management to carry out preventive maintenance and management of the installed base.

The new offers are designed on the basis of Schneider Electric’s three most renowned medium voltage product ranges: SM6, RM6 and GHA.

The company presented an innovative vacuum switch technology associated with air isolation. This association makes it possible to replace SF6 gas, while guaranteeing a low ecological footprint and a competitive cost.

Air is the best gas

“At Schneider Electric, we are convinced that the best gas is clean air,” explains Frédéric Godemel, Executive Vice-President of the Power Systems division which manages medium voltage. “I am very proud to present the SF6-free board, which embodies the technology of tomorrow.

We have developed these new products because they represent a major advance in terms of sustainable development. In addition, they allow us to establish a new state of the art for the safety and health of people while providing its advanced functions of digital data management. It is an ideal alternative to current solutions. “

The company has entered into discussions with the main players in the public and private distribution market (such as E.ON in Sweden) in order to carry out pilots for these new air-insulated switchgear.

Schneider Electric pointed out that this new SF6-free technology makes it possible to design equipment at a competitive cost that will promote widespread adoption on the electrical networks.

The company also highlighted the benefits of the many digital technologies that can be incorporated into these new boards.

For example, switchboard condition monitoring sensors, associated with advanced algorithms, such as those offered by the EcoStruxure platform from Schneider Electric, allow optimization of preventive maintenance and management of the installed fleet.
