Schneider Electric offers a set of solutions for thermal management in electrical enclosures through the Climatys range.
An electrical panel is a set made up of the following elements:

  • The envelope.
  • The apparatus.
  • Electrical conductors.
  • Various functions (signaling, control, information processing).

It has evolved in three directions:

  • Envelopes increasingly made of insulating materials.
  • Switchgear integrating more and more electronics which concentrates more and more functions in an increasingly reduced volume.
  • Increasingly high filling rate.
Thermal management

Industrial safety studies, a concept which includes:

  • the safety of people and goods,
  • the availability of electrical energy,

show that this is one of the critical points of any industrial or tertiary activity.
Its operation must therefore be perfectly mastered; and this control must concern not only the functioning of its constituents but also their operating conditions in a given environment.

Temperature and humidity in the enclosure

The analysis of malfunctions and shutdowns of an electrical installation shows that they are mainly of thermal origin: temperature too high or too low inside the enclosure.

The increase in the average temperature, which can exceed the limits supported by the equipment, can be explained by changes in electrical panels:

  • Use of insulating materials for the envelope which limits the evacuation of calories.
  • Widespread use of electronics and a higher filling rate increase the temperature.

This overheating may only affect certain areas: hot spots.
The too low temperature is due to the installation of the electrical panel in a very cold environment. It can cause condensation to form, a phenomenon harmful to the equipment.

Consequences

The presence of humidity or too high a temperature inside the enclosure can be the cause of many malfunctions:

  • Inadvertent triggering of protection devices.
  • Fire inside the envelope.
  • Burns for users.
  • Premature aging of the equipment.

The consequence of these malfunctions is an increase in the operating costs of the installation:

  • Maintenance costs.
  • Costs generated by the shutdown of the installation.

Goal

The thermal management solution chosen must:

  • Maintain the temperature and humidity level inside the enclosure at values corresponding to normal operation of the equipment.
  • Homogenize the temperature to avoid hot spots.

Choice of solution

The choice of products constituting the thermal management solution is made by making the thermal balance of the installation. It has 2 components:

  • Thermal balance inside the envelope.
  • Assessment of the climatic (temperature, humidity) or environmental (pollution) conditions of the place where the electrical panel is located.

CEM ventilation systems: CEM IP54 fan

To effectively protect equipment from electromagnetic interference, the CEM fan is fitted with:

  • A steel metal frame covering the plastic elements (self-extinguishing ABS in accordance with UL 94 V-0).
  • A metal grid integral with the frame.
  • A beryllium gasket ensuring conductivity between the perimeter of the fan unit and the casing.

Ultrafine heating resistors have been designed to solve condensation problems in the most complex installations.

Does the chassis used make it impossible to install a conventional heating resistor?
Here is the solution by Schneider Electric:

The space saving available for the equipment compared to a conventional resistance can be up to 30%.

Choice of solution

1 – Cool
Condition: Calculated temperature + 5 ° C> Desired temperature.

2 – Reheat
If the calculated temperature is lower than the desired temperature, the inside of the envelope must be warmed. The solution is the use of heating resistors. They make it possible to maintain the temperature above the dew point and thus avoid any risk of condensation.
To maintain a uniform temperature inside the enclosure and thus avoid hot spots, Schneider Electric offers a heating resistor equipped with a fan.

Objective: to avoid hot spots.
